The power of the solar eclipse

Seeing the eclipse on the path of totality is an experience that is hard to put into words. I can and will show you photos, and I’m certain you’ve seen the extraordinary images NASA has published, but they are replicas of an experience that is so majestic and profound it still brings tears just trying to describe it.

We live with the sun and the moon above us, but how often do we really pay attention to them, except for a glance here and there?

Mark and I found our perfect spot, rolled out blankets, and lay down wearing our special glasses to watch the show. From the moment the moon made its appearance in front of the sun, we were riveted. Unwilling to take our eyes off the movement above us, we watched the sun disappear, the day darken, and felt the temperature drop. When totality happened, we took our glasses off and for the first time looked directly at the sun.

The light, when it reappeared was at the horizon all around us. It didn’t have a warm glow like we are used to, this was an eerie sharp white light that was shadowless.

What was happening in the sky was so big, so glorious that it defies words. Let me instead say that we walked away from the event committed to experience it again by going to the next total eclipse in Spain in 2026 and then in Morocco in 2027.

If you have the opportunity, do not miss it.
